Vesterlyng has Zealand's largest grazing commons.
Vesterlyng is situated south of the idyllic little harbour town Havnsø – Vesterlyng is a large nature reserve and Zealand’s largest coastal heathland - 326 hectares. Here are fantastic plants, heather and juniper berries. Hawthorns and roses grow in the wild. During the summer months, Vesterlyng is a grazing area for cows and horses, because the vegetation in this way can be kept down. In the summer of 2008, Vesterlyng was a grazing area for three circus elephants.
Elephants at Vesterlyng
In September 2008, three elephants visited Vesterlyng. Vesterlyng acts each summer as a grazing space for both cows and horses, because the vegetation in this way is kept under control naturally, and the heather is thus kept down and doesn’t prosper. The elephant's visit to Vesterlyng had the same purpose. Elephants eat almost all kinds of greenery - approx. 100-200 kg per day - and they liked what Vesterlyngen had to offer.
Røsnæs and Vesterlyng are some of the very few places fire-bellied frogs live in Denmark. This frog is Denmark's most endangered species and is therefore protected. It is estimated that there are barely 2000 fire-bellied frogs remaining in Denmark. The decline is mainly due to pollution from fertilizers and the water table having been lowered.
