Bird watching and Angling

Angling in Kalundborg

There are obviously some really good opportunities to fish in Kalundborg with 160 km of coastline. E.g. out by Røsnæs Lighthouse, where you among other things have a good opportunity to catch garfish, or by sorten sten at Asnæs wood or Kalundborg inner fjord – which in particular is a good winter spot.

Bird Watching in Kalundborg

Bird watching is not reserved for ornithologists. Grasp a pair of binoculars and perhaps put a bird book in your bag – then you're equipped for a lovely bird trip e.g. along Tissø, Denmark's fourth largest lake.

The whole of Tissø is designated as a wildlife sanctuary. If you visit during the summer, there is always bird life at the south end of the lake, where you can go for a walk along the road and look out over the lake. Migratory birds dominate during the spring and autumn. Tissø is one of the places in Denmark, which brings together the most grey geese. Canadian geese, bean geese and whooper swans can also be seen during the colder period in flocks of hundreds.

Lots of species
Tissø is an important resting place for aquatic birds. Here are besides the geese great crested grebes, goosanders, various swimming and diving ducks, mute swans, whooper swans, Bewick's swans, teals and coots etc.

The lake’s meadows and reed woods are habitat for breeding birds like the avocet, the little tern, the reed bunting, the reed warbler and the marsh harrier. In addition, there may be bitterns, bearded tits, penduline tits and grasshopper warblers.

If you are lucky, you may even see the local white-tailed eagles. They spawn at neighboring Lake Skarresø, but are seen occasionally at Tissø, where they hunt ducks and coots.

Also the otter, which is an endangered species, still appears in Halleby Å systemet (stream system) and at Tissø.

Listen to the nightingale
On the east side of Tissø is the small deciduous wood, Klintskoven. Here the nightingale sings from mid May to mid June. Between 11 pm and 3 am - the nightingale is easy to hear, because all the other birds are asleep. You can park in the car park in the middle of the wood.

Preservation

Driving is prohibited for the sake of breeding birds from April 1st to July 15th on land areas from the wood Klintskoven’s southward edge and around the southern part of the lake.

Fugledegård Besøgscenter (Fugledegård visiting centre)

Fugledegård Besøgscenter is on Tissøs west side on the road between Lille Fuglede Bakkendrup. There is a bird tower with a good view of the lake. Many Viking finds are exhibited on Fugledegård, which have been discovered in and around the lake.
